International students who study in the USA, can stay back in the US using an OPT extension after graduating. If you have completed a course on an F1 visa, you get to stay in the US for one year. Not just that, during your study programme at either undergraduate or graduate level you are eligible for CPT (Curricular practical training), which has to be completed before graduating. The Optional Practical Training (OPT) temporarily allows you to work up to 12 months, provided that the job is related to your area of study. Also, STEM graduates are provided with a 24-month OPT training programme.
Once students get OPT, they are expected to find a job within 90 days after graduation. To apply for an OPT, submit form I-765 ninety days before your program end date. But before that, the Designated School Official (DSO) students who are enrolled in when they study in the USA must enter a request to opt into the Student And Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
